The Laurence & Ethel Young Scholarship
Spring 2026 Award
The Young Scholarship was made possible through a generous contribution from the trust of Laurence and Ethel Young in honor of Dr. Laurence Young, a former faculty member in Kinesiology who taught Physical Education at CSUN until his retirement.
This scholarship provides financial support to students in Kinesiology who demonstrate outstanding potential as they progress through their academic studies. One award in the amount of $2,000 will be granted.
Laurence and Ethel Young were longtime contributors to California State University, Northridge’s Center of Achievement. This gift expands their legacy of giving to the University and reflects their strong interest in the fields of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
Eligibility Criteria
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in Kinesiology.
- Graduation (or anticipated graduation) in Fall 2025, Spring/Summer 2026, or Fall 2026.
- Aspiration to pursue a career in Kinesiology.
If you are receiving financial aid (including loans), your financial aid award(s) may be adjusted if you receive a scholarship that exceeds your total aid limit or Cost of Attendance (COA). Speak with a financial aid counselor during walk-in hours for a detailed overview of your individual situation.

Reflection Essay Requirement
The reflection essay should address the following:
- Educational Biography: Provide a brief educational biography highlighting any pivotal life experiences or events that shaped your development as a student.
- Scholarship Criteria: Describe your academic successes and experiences with leadership and campus activities.
- Career Objectives: Explain your future academic and career goals in the field of Kinesiology.
The reflection essay should be 2–3 pages in length and formatted as follows:

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae or résumé (maximum 2 pages) that includes the anticipated graduation date and current GPA.
