Hugo and Irma Oppenheimer Student Award (CSM)

2025-2026 Academic Year

The Hugo and Irma Oppenheimer Student Award was created to support an undergraduate or graduate student of any major in Science or Mathematics who shows interest/skill in research and teaching.

Dr. Steven Oppenheimer, CSUN Emeritus Professor of Biology, established this Award in honor of his parents, Hugo and Irma Oppenheimer. The Oppenheimers left Germany to escape the Nazis in in 1939 and emigrated to the U.S., settling in Brooklyn, New York, where Dr. Oppenheimer was born in 1944.

Applicants:

  • Opportunity is open to students from any department in the College of Science and Math.
  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at CSUN for any part of the 2025-2026 academic year.
  • Must demonstrate excellence in research such as publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals. They should also show interest in and potential for excellence in teaching at the university, college, or K–12 levels.
  • Two letters of recommendation, at least one from a CSUN faculty member, that should highlight (1) applicants academic Accomplishments; (2) excellence in research; and (3) the demonstration of interest in and potential for excellence in teaching at the university, college, or K–12 levels.

If selected as the recipient, I agree to write a thank-you letter to the donor(s) and be willing to meet with the donor(s) or designee(s). Both to be coordinated by the College’s Director of Development.

Any change to your enrollment status resulting in less than required enrollment for any term within the award year will result in a cancellation of your award.
