The Richard Duenckel (Toluca Lake) Garden Club Scholarship
(Current Academic Year Award) Fall 2021: The purpose of The Richard Duenckel (Toluca Lake) Garden Club Scholarship is to award one continuing undergraduate or graduate CSUN student. To be considered, you must be enrolled in courses that include the study of botany, horticulture, conservation or other such plant-related topics. The selected award recipient will be expected to enroll at CSUN for the Spring 2022 term. The award is intended to be used for educational purposes only.
Students graduating at the end of the Fall 2021 term will not be considered.
About the Donor:
Toluca Lake, located in the San Fernando Valley, is known for its natural beauty. In 1947, a few of the area’s green-thumbed homeowners joined together to sustain and promote the
neighborhood’s signature landscapes. Its mission is to encourage interest in civic improvement, develop better horticultural practices, promote conservation of natural resources, and inspire
all phases of California native home gardening.
The Garden Club has been funding an annual scholarship for a CSUN student since 2010. Each recipient is asked to attend one of the Club’s meetings to explain their research and findings.
Sadly in 2016, the group lost their longtime treasurer, Richard Duenckel, and decided to change the name from the Toluca Lake Garden Club Scholarship to The Richard Duenckel Garden Club Scholarship in his memory. This award is also a tribute to his wife, Shirley, who served as Club president for more than 10 years.
