MSP John W. Gorman Memorial Scholarship

2024-2025 Academic Year Award

The John W. Gorman Memorial Scholarship was created to support students in a junior academic level pursuing a major in one of the following fields: Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Geological Science, Math, Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, or Environmental & Occupational Health. This scholarship honors Susan Gorman-Chang’s father, John W. Gorman.

Dr. John W. Gorman, grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the only son of John and Dorothy Gorman. As a youth, he set up a chemistry lab in his basement. High school further kindled his interest in math and science, and instilled a desire to attend college. His parents, not having much money, supported his enlisting in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at age 17. He was selected to serve as an Army Ranger, fighting in Europe and earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After the war he finished his education, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Then he went on to earn a PhD at the University of Minnesota. He embraced math and science and believed these disciplines could benefit society. The John W. Gorman Memorial Scholarship is in honor of the life he led, and his belief in the value of education.
