MSP Dorothy P. Johnson Scholarship
About the Donor:
A proud mother and CSUN alumna, Dorothy earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and urban studies, later earning her teaching credential. Immediately upon graduation, the Los Angeles Unified School District hired her as a third grade teacher at Century Park Elementary School.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dorothy is the seventh child of 11 brothers and sisters. Her parents decided to move to Los Angeles for more opportunities, less discrimination and a better life. Dorothy was a first-generation college student, and as her parents were self-employed, she and her parents appreciated the grant, student loan and student work programs that were available to her while at CSUN.
Although she is now retired after 38 years of service, Dorothy’s love for education has not changed. She believes that the positive impact of learning and interacting with students from many different countries enhances values, such as critical thinking, pride and awareness of citizenship, that are important to becoming a mature citizen. Dorothy is proud of her CSUN legacy, and is happy to give back to her alma mater through establishing the Dorothy P. Johnson Scholarship Fund.
